Tops in my summer capsule wardrobe
Today I’m rounding up a few of my favorite tops for summer in hopes to help you build your own capsule closet this season.
I love summer, because it’s so easy to create different looks with just a few pieces. And when you stick to neutral colors, it’s simple to mix and match. That doesn’t mean you can’t throw in a pop of color! In fact, pick either a statement top or dress to do this. But don’t underestimate the chic power of black and white!
For summer tops, I typically wear the following styles that’ll take you from day to night, pool party or vacation.
Ribbed tank top
Tanks are classic summer style on hot days. Pair with denim or paper bag shorts or a casual skirt. The ribbed texture adds a bit of edgy texture to your look. My favorite is one from ZSupply, with a flattering scoop neck and the perfect length that’s not too long and doesn’t show skin.
Neutral t-shirt
A staple tee is essential in any wardrobe. Pick a neutral color for easier layering here, like white, oatmeal, or gray. The possibilities are endless when you find one you love. My go-to’s are Madewell and Everlane.
Bodysuit
I used to be afraid of bodysuits! But I’ve come to learn that if you find the right ones, they can be great for layering a cute look. I love a classic white tank version for summer that can be paired with a fun skirt for a dressier vibe or denim or loose-fitting shorts for a casual, everyday outfit. They come in all sorts of necklines like square, halter, or classic tank so pick something that works for you!
Statement top
Even capsule wardrobes need an element of surprise! Go for something bold in a neutral palette like puff sleeves or ruffles. Or pick a fun floral print to romanticize any look. Statement tops can be worn with your fave pair of denim and heels or a pretty sandal. These are great for vacation looks or date nights!
Silk camisole
Go for a non-basic cami here for a chic, elevated look. I love this olive green color for pairing with dark, black, or white denim during summer. They also look great with flowier pants and skirts.
Breezy white button down
This is not your 9-5 button down, ladies. Go for a soft, airy, gauzy texture for your summertime button down. These pair perfectly with your fave denim shorts and gold jewelry. But they can also be layered over a tank or bathing suit! Half tuck or tie them up for a different look whenever you rock it.
