My favorite summer activities in the Bay Area

It’s true what they say. Californians have more fun.

OK - I don’t really know if that’s what people say but I’ve always loved that there is so much to do here! You can experience the bustle of the city, seeing the fog roll in over the mountains, and surfing at the beach all in one day. It’s pretty incredible.

I think for many of us summer brings a sense of nostalgia - that first day out of school, riding bikes around town, day trips to the beach, a summer concert in the park.

As I’ve grown into suburban life in the Bay Area, there are a few things I really enjoy this time of year.

I’ve fallen in love with Filoli Gardens. It’s fun to see what’s blooming all year, but April, May, and June are probably the most idyllic. It’s a great day trip if you're local, and they host fun events throughout the season. Exploring the grounds and all the beautiful blooms always spark my creativity.

Wine country is a blast anytime of year, but the summer is a great time to visit as many wineries put on special events. We loved the Lobster Feed at BR Cohn (we’re longtime members there) and I’m dying to go see some live music there. They’ve really enhanced their outdoor space over the last few years and the backdrop is picturesque with rolling hills of vineyards. A few of our other favorites to check out are here.

One of of my all time favorite spots for the summer is Lake Tahoe (no surprise, really!). Yes, it can get crowded. But if you time it right (and even if it is crowded), it’s the best summer vibes. I grew up on lakes, and Tahoe is next level in my mind. It’s stunningly beautiful and has a cozy mountain, small-town feel. We have been going up every summer since I was dating my now husband. I knew right away (and remember telling my husband this) that I wanted it to be a tradition with our friend group (lovingly known as the “framily”). Over the years, we have made such wonderful memories there, and it’s been so special watching each of our families grow. We typically stay in North Lake, but I love Emerald Bay (for boating and hiking). Garwoods and Jake’s are standbys. On my most recent trip, a friend recommended Sugar Pine Cakery, which was delicious and right next to a dog beach area (Skylandia). Good food, great friends, and that crystal blue water is really all you need.

Lastly, it wouldn’t be summer without days at the beach. Toes in the sand, dogs running through the water, crab cocktails and real cocktails, too. We love Half Moon Bay. Pillar Point is always a hit between Barbara's Fish Trap, the Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. and the nearby cove (which is dog friendly). Pacifica or Crissy Beach are also favorites for a quick day trip to soak up some sun and sand. I love grabbing a blanket and book and relaxing by the ocean waves.

Of course, between all the mini get-aways I’m longing for slow days floating in the pool, working in the garden, and grilling out back in our lovely outdoor space.
