How to host a home tailgate party

home tailgate party

Football season has kicked-off, and it’s one thing that brings a bit of normalcy to an otherwise not normal year.

Tailgating for football games is a tradition in the south, and I’ve had my fair share of experiences!

Clemson’s on-campus tailgating scene set at the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains is hard to beat. They have great traditions, rolling hills, beautiful architecture, friendly fans, and tons of orange!

Hosting a “homegating” party is a great way to keep traditions alive and support your team (football or otherwise) in the comfort of your house. Read on for some tips below.

Gameplan your spread

Just with any gathering, plan ahead. It doesn’t have to be over the top, but think of your tailgate food and prep what you can so you can enjoy the game!

Even at home, people will be watching the game so set up your food/bevvy station nearby with items that can be easily piled onto a small plate or picked up on the go.

I always have a combination of things like a cheeseboard, chips and dip, veggie platter, and yummy classics like crockpot meatballs and baked ham and cheese sliders (a staple in the south!). Look for seasonal selections from your local market for extra color - I lucked out with these sweet peppers perfect for tying in orange and purple.

Create a spirited cocktail

Think of something classic with a twist (bonus points for team colors!).

For this Clemson-themed watch party, an orange drink was a must! I made this blood orange Aperol cocktail dubbed the “Spiller Spritz” in honor of CJ Spiller being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Deck out with decor

It’s a bit easier to go all out on decorating at home, so don’t hold back on sports items and themed decor.

In addition to sports items, I sprinkled in some pumpkins for color and charm.

Use items you already have on hand like footballs, signs, and jerseys. If you have boys, you’ll find tons of treasures perfect for the occasion!

This may be a southern thing, but every football team seems to have its own line of entertaining ware. Team-themed platters/drinkware add to setting the scene, but you can also go for more of a neutral/general sports theme, too. If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor TV, host your homegating party outdoors! You can really replicate the tailgate with folding chairs, coolers, and games like cornhole. As long as there’s food, booze, and friends, it’s bound to be a good time!

I hope you find these tailgate party tips useful as you rally around your team!
