Spring edible garden for the novice
It feels like spring is really here. This past weekend (which happened to be Earth Day) we finally planted in our new raised veggie beds. To be honest, I had been putting it off for fear it might not take. I was trying to read tips, plan it out, but I never got to doing it. So rather than overthink it, we just went to the nursery one day and picked up a few things and dug in (literally!).
We have two raised beds near our fabulous lemon tree (I say fab because it has been exploding with lemons of late). They’re very simple - designed in wood. I had our landscapers install a watering system and so glad we did!
I have wanted to plant one with cut flowers since we were dreaming up this project. I love having beautiful blooms to harvest from the yard for centerpieces or just because. And while we have a pretty temperate climate, I just haven’t quite figured out the best time for certain types (think dahlias, ranunculus, etc.). Also, starting from seed is scary! Instead, I went with whimsy and grabbed some pretty looking wildflower seeds from our local nursery. We got a variety of poppies, mixed types, and some bulbs. The seeds are so TINY. I’m nervous but excited at the same time. And I can’t wait to update this if and when some lovely blooms decide to make an appearance!
For the veggies, we planted a lettuce mix, cucumber, yellow bell pepper, carrots, and strawberries. Basically perfect salad fixings! We purchased small starters rather than seeds as they’re a bit easier for the novice gardener (that’d be me).
I usually have some herbs on hand as well, but it has been hard to keep them going with construction (inside the kitchen). This time, I’m planning to keep them in our outdoor area likely on our dining table. They make for the cutest (and functional) centerpiece! And this beautiful olive added the perfect touch.
Are you planting this year? I’d love to hear your growing tips.
I plan on doing a tour of our backyard living space as so many have been asking for an update. The perfect time of year to hang outside and I’m so looking forward to enjoying what we designed.
Here are a few of my favorite gardening things of late.
Terracotta pots from Etsy, Rejuvenation, or West Elm
All time fave gardening tools like this multi-purpose tool
Have and love these gardening gloves
Just got a Tula Hat - I have the Outback style, actually cute and SPF!
Cheers!
