Lessons from my wildflower garden

Let the wildflowers remind us that softness arises out of strength
— yours truly

During my summer of slow, I committed to growing flowers in one of our new raised beds. I love fresh blooms so I thought it’d be great to have some unique varities in our backyard.

I tried to be prepared - bought a book, did some Googling, etc. But it got a bit overwhelming, so I decided to just go for it. I went down to my local nursery, bought some seed packets and sprinkled away hoping for the tiny dots to turn into something more.

A few months went by, but little by little green started to sprout up. The fun part was that I had no idea what was going to bloom. In time, I had a wild, colorful assortment of flowers including poppies and other California natives.

It was quite literally a beautiful mess. And the perfect reminder that softness arises out of strength. That you can bloom where you are planted against the odds. That sometimes the best things are unexpected.

If you have an area to plant, I highly recommend trying. It was rewarding, and I’m excited to try some fall varieties next!

Working in the garden is also such a great task for staying in the present. I tend to weeds, I get my hands dirty with earth, I prune and harvest (we’ve had cucumbers and strawberries of late!). It’s great to see the benefits of your work - juicy, organic fruit or new flowers budding. Something I’m looking forward to doing more and learning as I go.
