At home: landscape design plan

If you’ve been following along, you know that we’ve planned to renovate our 80-year-old+ house but put the majority of work on hold. In parallel to the renovation, we’ve also been planning a new landscape design.

We are fortunate to have a large lot - a rarity in (sub)urban California. The yard and garden have tons of potential, but the materials and layout are outdated. I’ve mentioned the 30+ rose bushes which while beautiful are a lot to maintain and most are poorly located. The pool is smack in the middle of the backyard, creating awkward spaces and no real flow. There are also drainage issues that ultimately could affect the integrity of the home.

As we re-design the house, we want to give the yard the energy and focus it deserves while bringing the outdoors in. Our intent is to maintain the character of the house (which by my read is a combination of French Country / European Tudor) and bring it into the current times.

In the spirit of preserving (and honestly saving money), we opted to leave the massive, awkward pool where it is. So making the best of it, our concept includes replacing old aggregate with more simplistic concrete paths and creating a true outdoor living area. We will also be replacing red brick in the front to match the new design.

I’m so excited for the outdoor living space and to share with you as we bring it to life! Entertaining is essential to how we live, so a well-functioning outdoor area is a must. The plans include a new barbecue island with a countertop and mini fridge. I haven’t picked out a countertop yet so I’d love to get some input!

Adjacent to the barbecue island will be the living space. This area will be framed by a large wood pergola equipped with heaters and a dining table. Right now, we’ve dreamed up an outdoor fireplace which will complement the old-world vibe of the house and be a focal point for the outdoor living area. Surrounding the fireplace will be greenery and seating, creating the ideal place to relax and unwind.

We’re retaining much of the existing flora and fauna and will fill in with additional screening trees to create an oasis. I’ve always wanted a garden, so we are incorporating garden beds as well. To help with sustainability, the yard will be equipped with a slow drip watering system as well as portions of no-mow grass.

Having worked in workplace and architectural design, I know the importance of creating experiences and moments when crafting spaces. I believe this to be even more true at home, and I’m looking forward to bringing this vision to life as well as sharing challenges and inspiration along the way!
