Learning the art of relaxation

I have to really work at relaxation. I know, it’s an oxymoron…but recent times seem to continuously push us to be more - more productive, more efficient, yet also more present. It is quite honestly exhausting.

And as someone who has always worked really hard toward her goals (and is also really hard on herself), I have a hard time taking the time I need to re-energize. It seems to be even more difficult as an entrepreneur, because I am often doing everything myself (there is no one to delegate to).

With an upcoming vacation, I’m looking forward to time away but it also has me thinking about how I can really unwind. As a blogger, vacations are often the source of inspiration but also content, so you really don’t stop working. I enjoy that because I love being creative, but also need to find a balance. All of us do! Here are a few ways I’m thinking about it.

Find activities that take focus

Usually when I think of vacationing, I think of lying on a beach somewhere and doing nothing. This is great if I would actually do nothing…but this is the plague of a busy mind. So instead, finding activities that require focus (hiking, biking, paddle boarding, horseback riding, surfing, etc.) really help to pull me out of my head. You have to be present to do these types of things and in doing so, it gives your mind a mental break from all the other stuff.

Read outside

Unless it’s raining, I always prefer to read outdoors (or in bed!). Getting outside helps me stay in the present. I need quiet to read and enjoy the soundtrack of birds and nature, too. On vacation this could look like morning coffee on the deck with a good book in hand.

Create when feeling inspired, but limit it

I often do get inspired when I change up my surroundings. Vacation usually means beautiful places after all! So for me, allowing my creativity to flow if it strikes is key. But being mindful to let it happen naturally and of the time I’m spending creating is important so as not to interfere being with loved ones. Allowing time for both and prioritizing what’s important to me (staying in the moment) is essential.

Go with the flow

This is a hard one for me on a regular basis, but it is crucial to let things go a bit while taking time away or to relax. If things are too planned or scheduled, you lose the sense of freedom that should come with vacation. I’m going to try not to overthink (packing, too!) and let things unfold naturally so I can enjoy the time to not be the one who has it all figured out. There is calmness in just being. And trusting that no matter what happens, good times are to be had and memories are to be made.
